Cuban, Venezuelan joint venture applies for fibre cable licence to Jamaica

Telecommunicaciones Gran Caribe SA (TGC), a joint venture company between the governments of Venezuela and Cuba, has applied for a licence to build and terminate an underwater fibre optic cable between Jamaica and Cuba.

The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) on Monday issued a public notice advising that the firm submitted an "application for a Carrier Licence for the construction and operation of international sub-sea Fibre Optic Cable Carrier Facility (FOCCF) with landing points situated in the territories of Jamaica and Cuba."

The local regulator is inviting interested parties may submit written comments by March 31.
TGC is 51 per cent owned by the government of Venezuela, with the remaining shares being held by the Cuban government. The state-owned company is now proposing to build the first fibre optic cable out of Cuba, which will provide greater reliability and lower cost for international telecommunications.
